High School Teacher Education Weekend: March 21-22

Friday, March 21, 2025 @ 7:00 pm - Saturday, March 22, 2025 @ 4:45 pm

Sunbridge’s High School Teacher Education program has opened its online weekend classes to non-matriculated high school teachers looking for professional development, and others interested in “sampling” our high school program.

Interested individuals are invited to join our High School Teacher Education students for the following March 21-22 classes:

Principles of Education
Polarities in Human Organization–Head and Limbs
Rudolf Steiner, Foundations of Human Experience, Lecture 13
Program students began a study of Steiner’s first course for teachers last summer and are continuing this study in their online weekends during the 2024-2025 school year. Participants may want to review lectures 1-12 prior to joining, although presentations will summarize and extend material in a way that should be accessible to all.
Instructor: Gary Banks

Contemplative Practice
Evolution of Consciousness and Active Thinking
Owen Barfield, History, Guilt & Habit, Chapter 3
Barfield’s History, Guilt & Habit is an introduction to his thinking about history, evolution, and human consciousness, including those ingrained, largely unconscious habits of mind that we may change to healthfully improve our relationships with the world and others.
Instructor: Stephen Sagarin

Practical Work in a High School
Neutrality, Empathy, and What Comes Next for DEI
Lily Zheng, What Comes After DEI?
Instructor: Faculty

Curriculum courses (choose either Humanities or Math & Science):

Humanities
Waldorf High School Literature Curriculum, Part I
How do we balance the Western canon and what’s new? How do we think about changing the curriculum? How can we use foundational literature (from the Western canon) and also be critical of those foundations? Discussion will include literary examples such as Romeo and Juliet paired with old/new Tristan and Isolde, Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Loving vs. Virginia; authors such as Jane Eyre and Charlotte Bronte; and films such as “The Brutalist” and “Megalopolis.” Readings TBA
Instructors: Heather Scott and Hans Staats

Math & Science
The Activity of Thinking
Albert Linderman, Why the World Around You Isn’t as It Appears, Chapter 4
Albert Linderman’s book is an introduction into Owen Barfield’s insightful, philosophical, and rigorous look at what could be called “phenomenological” science (recognizing that the word “phenomenological” means many things to many persons). Conversations, which began with the first three chapters in the October and February weekends, will connect Barfield’s thought and Linderman’s text with the practice of teaching science and math in Waldorf high schools.
Instructor: Noelle Frerichs
